Capitol Hill Cupcakes

About "Capitol Hill Cupcakes"

It took longer to clean up after "Capitol Hill Cupcakes" than it did to write it. And it took even longer to edit the piece thanks to my desire to insert sound effects. Using the sound effects was a carry-over from a prior idea I had to deliver political messages using sound. An okay idea for one-liners. For a do-it-quick, but do-it-well package, not such a good idea. Anyway, I paid for the three disks so I decided to use them.

I really didn't expect to make such a mess pouring the batter into the cupcake pan, but fortunately when you do satirical stuff, even what's wrong appears right. It's another incentive to keep producing more "Political Kitchen" episodes.

I didn't expect the green batter on the cabinet doors to ruin their finish, but that's what happened. I was even more surprised when a few days later, after I didn't clean up the green spillage in the range, the back wall of the oven blew forward and a fire ignited in the stove. As always, I tried to be positive. I was thankful that by putting the range out with the garbage, I didn't have to clean the green goop that spilled in the oven.

"Cupcakes" was one of two "Political Kitchen" pieces on a demo DVD I sent to all the broadcast and cable networks, focusing particularly on morning shows. I appreciate that CNN and Fox News Channel did look at my work. Despite their reputations as the liberal cable news channel and the conservative cable news channel, they shared the same opinion regarding "Political Kitchen." Their response was, "not a fit."

Back when I wrote "Cupcakes" the budget resolution story was topical. I took a day off from my tedious job as a federal grant and contract specialist, wrote the bit at 7:30am, ran to Wal-Mart to buy cupcake stuff and food coloring, folded a bunch of bills to fit the pan, made the green batter, and shot the thing. Without a doubt, shooting the piece was a lot more fun than the government work I do every day.

Hey, this is great. Nice script, videography, graphics, sound, and gooey green props. Looks like you put a lot into this. It definitely has a TV vibe, but it works at this web size too. Looks like too much

Too bad about the difficulty cleaning up afterwards! I blame congress for that.

Whoops, had a few extra words in there. Scratch the sentence fragment at the end of the 1st paragraph.
